ShotWell, ShotWell does a very good job managing libraries of photos. One use case is to have all of your photos on disk storage and to import (without copying) the photos into shotwell, shotwell. The metadata tags of the photos will be used to build an event hierarchy based on Year, Month, Day. A folder hierarchy is also available to browse through the photos.
